Gird your Loins

Psalm 18:32-33

In the movie ’The devil wears Prada’ there is this scene at the beginning where Miranda (Meryl Streep), the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine comes in the morning to work. She is early and all her staff are not prepared for her arrival. Nigel (Stanley Tucci) who is the art director, tells all to ’gird your loins’ and – a crazy like scene starts to unfold in the large office to make the environment ready for the boss to enter.  People start changing their shoes, apply lipstick, clear their working desks and turn all the chaos into complete order.

’Gird your loins’ is an expression that tells us to ’prepare and brace ourselves for something unexpected and difficult about to happen’

We see in Psalm 18:32-33 this idea of God’ girding us with strength, encircling with stamina and courage for what is ahead.

And it’s not just with physical strength that he envelops us, but emotional and mental courage also. God stables our feet like them of the deer who knows how to navigate through difficult and rugged terrain. What a start for our week, meditating on this truth of God inspiring us with courage, fortitude and determination – strengthening our minds, bodies and hearts for what is ahead.

You have wrapped me in power,
and now you’ve shared with me your perfection.
Through you I ascend to the highest peaks of your glory
to stand in the heavenly places, strong and secure in you.”
